چکیده
Abstract The recognition of striking regularities in the physical world plays a major role justification hypotheses and development new theories both natural sciences philosophy. However, while scientists consider only strictly as explanations for such regularities, philosophers also explore meta-natural hypotheses. One example is mathematical realism, which proposes existence abstract entities an explanation applicability mathematics sciences. Another theism, offers supernatural being design-like appearance cosmos. Although all defy empirical testing, there strong intuition that some them are more warranted than others. goal this paper to sharpen into clear criterion (in)admissibility facts. Drawing on recent debates about indispensability teleological arguments God, I argue admissible just case refers entity that, though not itself causally efficacious, guarantees instantiation efficacious actual cause regularity.

Indispensability Arguments and Mathematical Explanation in Science
The aim of this thesis is to find a way to undermine the indispensability argument for mathematical platonism. In chapter 1 I provide a brief survey of the indispensability argument, arguing that the explanatory indispensability argument is stronger than earlier forms of the argument. This is because it has less controversial premises, appealing neither to confirmational holism nor to a strong ...
متن کاملMathematical arguments in context
Except in very poor mathematical contexts, mathematical arguments do not stand in isolation of other mathematical arguments. Rather, they form trains of formal and informal arguments, adding up to interconnected theorems, theories and eventually entire fields. This paper critically comments on some common views on the relation between formal and informal mathematical arguments, most particularl...

متن کاملThe Role of Diagrams in Mathematical Arguments
Recent accounts of the role of diagrams in mathematical reasoning take a Platonic line, according to which the proof depends on the similarity between the perceived shape of the diagram and the shape of the abstract object. This approach is unable to explain proofs which share the same diagram in spite of drawing conclusions about different figures. Saccheri’s use of the birectangular isosceles...
متن کاملRecognizers: Arguments and Design Decisions
The Forth text interpreter processes words and numbers. Currently the set of words can be extended by programmers, but not the recognized numbers. User-defined recognizers allow to extend the number-recognizer part, too. This paper shows the benefits of recognizers and discusses counterarguments. It also discusses several design decisions: Whether to define temporary words, or a set of interpre...
